The
lithograph, Angels of Liberty, depicts fallen firefighters,
police and others being escorted to heaven in the
aftermath of the World Trade Center collapse. To view

The artist, Holly Schapker, prayed for the building's
occupants as she sat stunned watching the event on
television September 11, 2001 with the rest of the
nation. However, it wasn't until the memorial service
at Yankee Stadium that she had the vision of winged
angels escorting victims to heaven.
"I
was moved to tears by the remarks of Oprah Winfrey
on September 23, 2001. I had a vision of beautiful
angels taking firefighters and police by their hands
and leading them to heaven. I covered the wall of
my studio with a canvas eight feet tall and began
painting that day," says Schapker.
Like most Americans, Schapker had not been able to
concentrate on her work (her impressionistic floral
paintings) since the disaster. She painted for three
months on the canvas. The 50" by 84" painting
won an impressive credential, second place in the
national juried competition, Spirit of America, put
on by the art supplier, Tara Materials. Her friends
and family were brought to tears by the image, but
she hadn't considered the comforting effect on others
until the Spirit of America competition. "It
was then that I got the idea to get a free copy of
this image to as many victims families and friends
a possible. It might be of some help. The Foundation
(Angels of Liberty Foundation) was formed to raise
the money to create and distribute
the lithograph."
The lithograph is now being sold by the Foundation
in order to fulfill Schapker's goal: to provide a
free copy of the image to as many as 50,000 fire and
police and their families in New York City. It is
